Pleural Mesothelioma.A mesothelioma is a tumour of mesothelial cells which generally occurs in the pleura (rarely a mesothelioma may occur in the peritoneum or other organs).

A mesothelioma is a tumour of mesothelial cells which generally occurs in the pleura (rarely a mesothelioma may occur in the peritoneum or other organs). Pleura (PLOOR-a), a thin layer of tissue covering the lungs and lining the interior wall of the chest cavity. It protects and cushions the lungs. This tissue secretes a small amount of fluid that acts as a lubricant, allowing the lungs to move smoothly in the chest cavity while breathing. When pleural mesothelioma cancer speads, the cells of the mesothelium become abnormal.
The National Institute of Cancer has been conducting research with asbestos as the overwhelming risk factor for pleural mesothelioma. The moe exposur to asbestos, and the longer the duration of exposure, the great the chance of pleural mesothelioma cancer. The risk of developing asbestos-related diseases, including pleural mesothelioma, varies with the type of industry in which the exposure occurred and with the extent of the exposure. Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a very lethal disease and little is known about prognostic factors.
Pleural Mesothelioma Treatment
Surgery is a common pleural mesothelioma treatment. The doctor may remove part of the lining of the chest or abdomen and some of the tissue around it. For cancer of the pleura (pleural mesothelioma), a lung may be removed in an operation called a pneumonectomy. Sometimes part of the diaphragm, the muscle below the lungs that helps with breathing, is also removed. While pleural mesothelioma treatment techniques and practices continue to evolve, this pleural mesothelioma remains a disease that is uniformly fatal and unquestionably associated with exposure to asbestos.

When it comes to the treatment of mesothelioma, you need to know about the mesothelioma stages. The pleural mesothelioma stages are different to the staging of peritoneal mesothelioma stages.
Pleural Mesothelioma StagesThere are two staging systems in use for pleural mesothelioma stages - the TNM system and the Brighan system.
TNM SystemTNM system is the more common method fo cancer staging. THM variables of Tumor (T), Lymph Nodes (N), Metastasis (M). Stage 1 is the earliest stage and stage 4 is the most advanced stage.
Stage I: Mesothelioma has affected on one layer of the pleura. though it may have grown into the heart (pericardium) and diaphragm cover.Stage II: Mesothelioma has affected on both layers of the pleura, but it is on one side of the body only.Stage III: Mesothelioma has spread to the chest wall, food pipe (oesophagus), or even the lymph nodes on one side of the chest.Stage IV: This is an advance stage of mesothelioma. At this stage, mesothelioma has gone to the bloodstream and other organs in the body including liver, brain, bone, or to the lymph nodes on another side of the chest.
Brighan SystemThis staging is based on whether the mesothelioma can be removed by surgery and if the lumph nodes are involved or not. Also there are four stages in the Brighan system:
Stage I: In this stage, mesothelioma can be removed with surgery and lymph nodes have not been affected.Stage II: Mesothelioma can be removed with surgery, but ther are lymph nodes containing cancer cellsStage III: Mesothelioma cannot be removed with surgery since the heart and the chest wall or even the peritoneum have been affected. There may or may not be lymph nodes containing cancer cells.Stage IV: Mesothelioma has affected the bloodstream and the heart, brain, bone, and liver
Peritoneal Mesothelioma StagesThere is no established staging system for peritoneal
